More Pacu Fishin’

March 17th, 2008 by anthonylam

Last week, on wednesday (12th march), went to try at Tanjung Syawal again. This time with Dan S. It was cloudy, wasn’t hot enough… So we didn’t do well. Dan got 2 pacus. Small ones. Smaller than the previous visit’s (the ones i caught with Dan Raj).

Heard from the ppl there that the bigger pacus all fished out dy. They just put in new ones, but really small. All around 500gm only maybe. I tried bomb fishing with bread. I got a small 6 inch Leeko. Threw into the river behind.

That’s all. So sad. We left after 2 hours. No point staying since not good.

—–

This morning (17th march) went with Dan S again. I fished for 3 hours, he fished for 2. He played float the whole time, din get anything. I got a small pacu (approx 500gm) and two 6-inch Leekos, all on bomb. According to the worker, they din put anymore pacu since the last time coz now added more Leeko.

While i was there, saw the chinese uncle caught a 1+kg patin on float… But the biggest was a young guy who caught a Leeko, at least 3+kg. He fought for i think close to 10 mins just to get it in the net. So nice! Wish i had that! Other ppl din get anything.

Polling Day Pacu Fishing

March 9th, 2008 by anthonylam

Yesterday (8th March) was polling day. Before i get to my fishing stuff. Just wanna say that i’m glad with the results. It’ll be interesting to see what happens over the next 4-5 years.

—–

Ok… I heard bout this place about a week ago, from Teh at Teluk Pulai Shop. There’s a pakcik who gets like 30kg of pacu in like 2 hours all the time here. It’s called Tanjung Syawal.

Went to try it out with Daniel Raj yesterday, since both of us not elligible to vote yet. Haha.

We use cacing tanah and cengkerik. All also very laku. In first 1hr15mins, each of us got 5 pacus! Good fights! I got double hook-ups twice! Daniel also got once!

Then we cahnged to bottom fishing to see if can get bigger fish. Nothing. Only the last half hour of our 3hour session, we went back to float for pacu. Got 2 each, both double hook-ups.

Our rods maybe a little too big la. It would’ve been nicer to fight those pacus with smaller rods. Nevertheless, they gave us good, thrilling fights at times. The score ended 7 - 7.

So, after everything, we sold all the fish to a regular there - a chinese uncle. All 14 pacus = 8kg = RM18. He offered me RM2/kg, in the end gave me a little extra. I know it’s kinda low, i could sell for RM4/kg if i know some other ppl outside who wanna buy for makan. This guy probably will kumpul, then sell to them.

Since we paid RM20 for 3 hours each, after we minus the money we each made from the fish, we only paid RM11 each for the day’s fishing. Great! Actually, i kinda consider it 2 hours of fishing. If we did seriously stick to pacu fishing, we could’ve finished at 2 hours with the same 8kg or more! So we kinda only had to pay RM14 per person for entry, and that would make it RM5 per person at the end of the day. But nevermind la… Had great fun!

Must go there again next time. Saw some ppl got Patin and Tilapia also. And some ppl went home with huge 3+kg Liku, caught before we went there. Next time must bring Bom dy.

Ok la… That was a good trip. Can’t wait to go there again!

CNY 2008 Fishing

February 12th, 2008 by anthonylam

Back to class this morning (12th Feb). CNY holidays are over. Guess i should give my CNY fishing report too, before procrastination leads to memory loss.

—–

Day before CNY. Went to Uncle Stephen’s house for reunion lunch. Just the night before, he called my dad to tell me to bring my fishing gear. Out of nowhere! I didn’t even ask.

See… Uncle Stephen lives in this huge house in Tropicana. It’s got a big swimming pool out back. Beyond the swimming pool, a low fence is all that stands between his home and a river which flows through the Tropicana Golf course. It’s beautiful. The river is filled with fish… Filled to thre brim (or in this case, the banks?). And we’re so close to the golf action as well. In fact, there are 2 greens (2 different holes) that are both less than 50-60 metres away. So ppl can see me fish.

Needless to say… Fishing is not allowed. Not really, at least. But since my uncle is rich… Haha. No la… My uncle is nice, so he has good relations with the course marshalls. So anyway, he said no prob to me fishing. He saw that i was excited to see the ‘untouched’ river last year, n knew i’d love to be able to fish.

So… the bait. Even though on so short notice, i managed to get a few frogs, some prawns, n some bread. Frogs didn’t work in the end. Bread n prawns were great winners. But the champion of champions was my "diamond imitation Rapala" lure. It almost got me a big haruan, and it eventually got me my biggest catch of the day… An adult Jaguar Cichlid. Approx 12 inches! Good fight! Biggest Jaguar i’ve ever caught.

Other than the huge Jag, i caught at least 30 other fish. Some tilapia, some smaller jags, and quite a few "lucky fish". Good play la overall. I used only 10lbs, and 12lbs lines.

The funniest part was when one of the tilapias i caught jumped out of the bucket n into the swimming pool when i was about to release it back to the water… (Catch n release! That’s the way to go, anglers!)… All my cousins spent the afternoon trying to get the tilapia from the huge pool. Anthony (my 10-year-old cuz from NZ) got it eventually. Funny la… Dropped a tilapia into the swimming pool. That was a crazy task… Trying to get a relatively small fish in that huge, huge pool. We didn’t really have nets too.

It was good fishing la. Very glad i managed to fish there. Next time i go there, maybe will get a haruan?

Saturday (9th Feb) (3rd day of CNY)… Afternoon, went prawn fishing with Uncle Nelson n Khang Yinn. I stopped after 2 hours, coz so many ppl came in. And it was difficult to fish. I got 250grams to add to the 1kg in my freezer. Khang Yinn did all 3 hours, n got about 350grams. Uncle Nelson got about 650grams in 3 hours. He continued more at night, but we didn’t join him…

Instead, me n Khang Yinn went to Giant Shah Alam Pond. We wanted to try freshwater fishing after all this time. Expected to get a few keli la. We went at 9pm, came back at… 2am. Haha. Shhh…

We used prawns and worms. I got a small Jaguar on worms early on. Then about 11+pm, my rod tipped like crazy… The entire rod lifted, and was almost pulled into the water! I grabbed the rod, whacked, and fought! It was a huige, heavy animal, whatever it was. I’m guessing it was a carp. Or possibly a toman or huge haruan. Tak sangka can get a fight like that there anymore. Anyway… I fought it a while, then all of a sudden the line was loose. I thought i lost it. But suddenly, it went off again! This time stronger, the rod was bending like crazy. I thought it would break! Finally, the line snapped! Aaargh!! The two of us were screaming! Couldn’t believe we missed that! Dunno what it was, but i’m sure that would’ve been the biggest fish i ever caught… If only i had.

My hands were shaking right after… I was trembling… My hands were weak. Even though it was like about 1-2 minutes only, the fight was incredibly thrilling. The fight - That’s what fishing is about. Wooo!

We tried to get our minds off of that, and continued fishing. Khang Yinn got a Keli about half an hour before we left.

He was happy with his new rod. I helped him pick out a rod, reel, and line just a few days before. He’s already got a good sized Keli with it on it’s first ‘voyage’. Not bad.

That’s all my CNY holiday fishing.

Will go back to get that monster soon… Till i do, mayhaps?…

Tiger Prawn Craze

February 3rd, 2008 by anthonylam

On Jan 11th, went for prawn fishing with Uncle Nelson. Each of us only got 4 in 3 hours! So the boss kesiankan the two of us beginners n gave each of us half a kilo. That’s about 18 prawns each. Mum cooked it all a few days ago, Baked with cheese. Goooood.

On friday (1st Feb) and yesterday (2nd Feb), went again. Friday got about 10 prawns + 1 small one (flicked out). Yesterday got 21! 630grams. Its usually 30grams per prawn. That’s big… And their real sweet too. Haha…

Now i got almost 1kg in the freezer downstairs. Can’t wait to makan.

—–

Haven’t gone fishing much. Thaipusam (i think it was like 2 weeks or so ago…) went to Jeram but didn’t get anything.

Want to go fishing soon…

CNY around the corner… Need money… To help fund my fishing…

Till next fish…

End of 2007, Beginning of 2008 -8th Jan 2008-

January 8th, 2008 by anthonylam

Today was my first day back in school after a 3-month long break… But none of that! - This is all about fishing!

2007! Shall be remembered as my freshie year… for fishing! (and uni, but that’s not as important as fishing… haha)

It all began with a CNY trip to Kuala Selangor with Pon, DanS, KY, and CommGid… My first ‘Sepat Hutan’…

Now… i’m GILA PANCING! Spending lots of money on fishing equipment all the time… Especially over the past couple of months, as i picked up saltwater fishing…

—– Back to the log —–

After our kelong trip, i tak puas lagi… So i went on my own to Jeram on 29th Dec(Sat). It’s been sometime since my last catch there, but this time i didn’t come home empty-handed. I got a Jenahak, 1.3kg. Good fight! My first fish on my new rod and reel (Santec 7ft rod, with Banax reel), and my first fish on braided line too. The fish is still in the freezer. Haven’t had the opportunity to makan yet.

—–

Last night(monday), was supposed to go for badminton… But decided to ponteng, to join Uncle Nelson for prawn fishing! First time trying it. Not bad la… At least got 7 prawns. He also got 7 prawns. Right after fishing, took the prawns straight to Delta Mamak and ask the people to cook with mee goreng! Sedap giler! The tiger prawns all big ones!

When we just got the food and started eating, we realized that 3 minutes before we makan the prawns, they were still alive… Haha! Doesn’t get any fresher than that man! Pancing, masak, terus makan!

Prawn fishing quite interesting also la… Might do it more often from now on. Maybe get a prawn fishing rod soon. Haha… More spending soon.

1st Kelong trip

December 28th, 2007 by anthonylam

Well, haven’t gone fishing for some time… Haven’t been around Malaysia for the past couple of weeks… The moment i came back, decided to gather people for our first Kelong trip!

So, a few days ago, on Wednesday (26th Dec, ‘Boxing Day’), we made a trip to the Kelong in Bagan Lalang. The group: Uncle Nelson, Uncle Tony (not me!), Uncle Aaron (Uncle Tony’s bro-in-law), Khang Yinn, Ben Yee, and myself…

Early in the morning, i got Ben and KY and left for Jeram to get our live bait. 30 belanak and 25 prawns for RM50. Then, back in Klang, got ice from Meru Corner, gathered at Uncle Nelson’s place, and left Klang around 6.45am.

Took us about 2 hours to reach the place. After breakfast, we left for the Kelong. The Kelong wasn’t really huge, so after a couple of hours and about 20 people coming onto the Kelong, it was kinda packed.

Overall, the fishing didn’t meet our expectations. We were expecting big fish… Like maybe lots of 1-2kg fish at least. The whole day there, only one guy pulled up a fish aroud that weight range. The rest of us just got 5-7 inch "Tamban"s, and small Target Fish.

My first catch of the day was a Mono Angel. Really nice looking fish, gave a good fight on apollo. All my fish were caught on Apollo, except for my only Senangin (about 7-8 inches). I caught 32 fish. 1 Mono Angel, 1 Senangin, 1 Halfbeak (Todak), 5 Target Fish, 23 Tamban, and 1 unidentified little fish.

The others’ combined catch was slightly less than mine, i think… But they caught a few types of fish that i didn’t manage to. They caught some Gelama, i think… And some colourful fish, and even some crabs by setting traps below the Kelong. Most of the guys seemed disappointed that we didn’t get any big fish, but personally, i left the place quite happy.

Even though i didn’t get any big fish, it was a good learning experience. It was our first time to this place. We didn’t really know how to set realistic expectations, so i guess i’m alright with the outcome.

It just wasn’t the right season. There just weren’t any big fish. Not sure if we’ll ever go back there. It’s likely that we would, but we’ll have to check with the owner about the seasons next time around.

—–

So, that was my first Kelong trip… Right now, just looking forward for next Jeram Pay Pond trip :) Need to get big fish soon!

Illegal Fishing at Citizen’s Park… What a rush! - 28th Nov

November 28th, 2007 by anthonylam

Around noon, went with ZF, Dan S, Dan P, and ZK to "Citizen’s Park" for curi-curi fishing. Haha.

Brought bread to feed the fish and bring them up. Then used a hand line tied to a bottle, and dropped in a bread bait. I held the line and felt the fish pull. Passed it to ZF and when he pulled out… It was a huge Lampan Jawa. I think it was about a kilo! So fat! We took to the tree-shaded area and took some photos, then released.

Did one more time, this time ZF got a huge Patin! At least 2 ft! So fat! I think at least 3 kilos! pull to the side, then line broke.

By then, Ran out of bread and had to go back to car to get another hook. The guys were about to go buy while Dan P and i waited, when an MPK guy walk towards us. He knew what we were doing but had no evidence. We had to split, leaving my red pail for the MPK guy to confiscate. Babi!

But it was hilarious la! Unbelievably hilarious! Haha. Almost kena tangkap! The fish were huge! So fun! Haha. The guys are thinking about going back there this friday during Friday Prayers time… Haha.

Citizen’s Park… Cool huh…

Deepavali Fishing - 8th Nov 2007

November 8th, 2007 by anthonylam

Today went to Jeram pay pond again. This time, it was Uncle Nelson, Uncle Tony, Reuben P, Ben Yee n myself.

When we reached the pond about 3pm, not many ppl there at all. Only 2 persons fishing. We had expected the place to be packed. We went in at 3.30pm. It was pretty quiet. Takde bites…

After approximately an hour, i got a gentle tug on the line… I put the bait just at the edge of the pond, only about 2-3ft away from me… It was definitely siakap! I let it pull a few more times, to let it swallow the bait properly, then… Whack! I had the siakap hooked on… The siakap fought well n leaped a few times…

After bout 20-30seconds of nice tug-o-war with the fish, Uncle Nelson helped me scoop it out! 1kg again… Exactly same size as yesterday’s siakap. Not bad! Belanak bait, 30lb line, 40lb leader.

That was the only fish we brought back. Reuben almost got fish twice. He fought with fish twice, n both times string putus… I told him! I told him can’t use his normal line at this pond! Dun wanna listen la! Waste his money only! He went in with a line that looked to be about 10-12lb only! I told him it would be sayang if he lost fish coz of his line putus but he said won’t… Now he knows dy la… At least 30lb line for saltwater pay ponds like this one… Haih… He lost 2 fish! First one seemed to fight like a jenahak, second one could’ve been anything… Possibly siakap or bawal, or even kerapu! We didn’t manage to see either one before the line putus…

Oh well… Hopefully lesson learnt there… I’m happy i came home with another siakap to put into the freezer. I think this weekend i’ll eat the first one with family… And the other, i’ll makan with the guys la. Kesian they all… Takde ikan langsung…

So… Not bad la… At least i caught a fish… My Deepavali fishing trip turned out to be not too bad after all.

—–

After fishing, came home…

Since the rest of family makan dinner dy, Mummy decided to deep fry the senangin i caught yesterday, for me to makan with maggi mee. So i had maggi soup with a side dish of a fried senangin. The fish was excellent! Aaah… Have to go back n get more fish!

Still waiting to get my first kerapu n bawal… n well… every other type of fish i haven’t caught… Haha.

Unfortunately, come Monday, i’ll begin my month of missions trips, might not be able to fish for the next one month. Hopefuly can go at least once after i return from SEALINK Conference in Pattaya, n before i leave for Chiang Mai/Rai…

Giler pancing dy! Giler pancing!

The Beginning (Jenahak, Siakap, Senangin)… 5thNov - 7thNov

November 7th, 2007 by anthonylam

I consider this the beginning coz i only caught my first saltwater fish on Nov 5th(Monday), even though i went to the pay pond twice before (once in Oct, and once on Nov 1st).

On Nov 5th, Uncle Nelson picked me up from my home… The plan was to go to Sea Lion Pond, Port Klang. When we reached there, saw so many ppl fishing, so we decided to go back to Jeram.

I caught my first jenahak (aka "ang cho")! I just put the line at the edge of the pond, just 2-3 feet in front of me, in the shallow water… Suddenly got a strong pull! The fish pulled so hard, it pulled my line out so quickly… My drag was quite loose, of course. I fought the fish for about 30seconds, i think. It shot to the left and to the right, and out into the deeper parts, and back to the sides so quickly with such power! It even leaped out once! So cool to see the fish leap out like a marlin… Haha… Finally landed my first saltwater fish… A 1.2kg jenahak. Excellent fight! Could never get any fight like that in usual freshwater spots!

Not long later, i got another pull at the same spot. My bait was belanak again. It was another jenahak. This one fought harder. It leaped a few times too! It was slightly smaller though… Unfortunately, i lost it when Uncle Nelson tried to pull it out of the water once i brought it to the side. After about 30seconds of fighting with the fish, it came off the hook! So sayang! I think i didn’t whack the line enough! Wasted!

Oh well… win some, lose some. At least i went home satisfied with 2 of the best fish-fights i’ve had thus far…

Ate the fish for dinner with family yesterday (6th Nov). Sedap! It was huge! So much meat, even though just 1.2kg! Pakai steam… Steamed jenahak… Yum!

—–

Nov 7th (Wednesday)… Today la!

Went there with Uncle Nelson again. Again just 2 of us. Because it was quite hot, i went to the other side, where there was a shady area… I knew the fish would be there coz it was cooler there. I threw my bait in just about 10ft away from the side, and then i felt pulls, a siakap was taking the bait… I let it swallow the belanak, then… I whack!! I got it hooked! My first siakap! Unfortunately, my line was giving me problems at the spool, so i ended up using my hand to pull the line in n fight with the siakap, like fly-fishing… Hehe. The siakap leaped out of the water a few times… Chun Giler! I called Uncle Nelson to get a net n help me get it out of the water after i played with it for almost a minute… Landed! my first siakap! Only 1kg, but more than enough to be table-size! Wooohooo! Sweet n sour siakap!

I almost landed another siakap at that spot. A bigger one. I fought with it a few seconds, then it came off… I think coz i didn’t let it swallow the belanak properly… Sayangnye… This one was bigger! At least 1.5kg! Aiseh!

Later on, i caught my 3rd saltwater fish of my career/life/existence… A tiny 10inch senangin. Pretty looking fish… It tried to take my belanak, n kena hooked on! Haha! Can cook at home la this one! Wooohooo!

—–

So… So far those are the 3 saltwater fish i’ve caught… Tmrw is Deepavali. Might go there again.

Just now the truck came with lots of kerapu… Some maybe 5-6kg!

Let’s hope i manage to catch big ones tmrw! 3 fish and all 3 different types already… If the pattern continues, tmrw i might get a 2-3kg bawal, or a 4-5kg kerapu!

What is this all about? - The Introduction - 7th November 2007

November 7th, 2007 by anthonylam

"Not Just Another Fish Story" (Dec2006 - Oct2007) tak jadi work for me anymore. It has been removed.

This will be my new fishing log. This will be a place where i can talk about all my fishing experiences.

I know that lots of stuff bout this crazy hobby of mine was in the old blog, but i think i wanna start afresh.

—–

I started fishing in February of this year, and since then been going freshwater fishing all over Klang Valley. Caught some good stuff every now and then…

In October (just a few weeks ago), i started going to a saltwater pay pond in jeram. Now, that i’ve caught my first few saltwater fish, i feel this is the best time to start this fishing log, or fishing blog.

I didn’t catch anything in my first 2 trips to the saltwater pay pond, so i’m only starting this blog now… In November… On 7th November 2007… The day i record my 3rd saltwater catch in 3 days!

We’ll let the first real entry talk bout the real action…

NEXT-
